New Texas Motorcycle Helmet Law Proposed

  • Lawmakers in Texas are currently considering a Bill (House Bill 748) which would make wearing a helmet mandatory for anyone riding a motorcycle in Texas.

The current Texas motorcycle helmet law requires that all motorcycle riders under 21 years of age must wear a helmet. For riders older than 21, they are not required to wear a helmet if:

    • They have successfully completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course, OR
    • They are covered by a health insurance policy that provides them with medical benefits for injuries if they have an accident while riding or operating a motorcycle.

However, a new bill filed Friday, January 11, 2019 in Austin could make it against the law to not wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle in Texas.

If passed, House Bill 748 would mean anyone not wearing protective gear on their heads while riding a motorcycle could be committing a criminal offense.

    WHAT CAN YOU DO?

First and foremost... Support you local and state MROs (Motorcycle Rights Organizations) like Texas ABATE, TMRA (Texas Motorcycle Roadriders Association and othes.  These organizations work everyday to protect the rigths and safety of everyone who rides.

Contact Representative Victoria Neave’s (District 107/Dallas County) office and express your disapproval in a clear, deliberate, and precise manner. Capitol Phone: (512) 463-0244; (512) 463-9967 Fax; District Phone: (972) 288-9438

Contact your local representative and let them know that, as their constituent, you stand firmly against this assault on adult personal choice and accountability. The link to find your representative’s contact information can be found here.

Contact the new Speaker of the House, Dennis Bonnen’s office and let him know that you stand firmly against this assault on adult personal choice and accountability. As a freshman, he supported our current helmet law as written. His information can be found here.

Show up on January 28, 2019 for Texas Biker Legislative Day at the State Capital . Be seen. Show up to Representative Neave’s office and politely but firmly express your dissent. Show up to your representative’s office and politely but firmly express your dissent. If you live in Dallas County, show up to her office and politely but firmly express your dissent. Regardless of any misguided or emotional motivations presented by Rep. Neaves, Texas motorcyclists will not stand by while personal liberties are threatened. We need to stand up, be seen, be heard, and put this attempt to bed.

Share this with as many as you can.  Don't let this wind up like most laws where on one knows about them until they become law and then to late to do anything about it.
