Kawasaki Recalls Certain Vulcan Models For Stalling Engines
Motorcycle maker Kawasaki Motors Corp. says it is recalling certain Vulcan cruiser models from the 2009 and 2010 model years because of a problem with engine control units, or ECUs, that could cause them to stall unexpectedly.
According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the stalls can occur when the rider is coasting with the clutch lever pulled, which disengages the clutch mechanism. Under the recall dealers will replace the ECUs with new ones that have different settings to correct the stalling problem.
A stalling engine is dangerous to a motorcycle rider because a loss of power followed by rapid slowing can result in a rear-end collision. Also, if the engine stalls with the clutch disengaged, it can cause the motorcycle to lurch or buck if the rider suddenly releases the clutch lever. This can be severe enough to cause a loss of control.
