About the Bub Lollis Whitten Center Benefit Run

The Whitten Center located in Clinton, SC is a state run residential treatment facility for approximately 240 people with developmental disabilities and special needs. Many of these residents have only the Whitten Center employees as family and are confined to spend the rest of their lives at the Center.
The ride started 27 years ago with a small group of motorcycles on a cold rainy day in November leaving Spartanburg for the ride back to Clinton. The residents don’t have the opportunity to go out and see a parade so the small group of bikers decided to take one to them. Each and every resident that is able to walk or be rolled out of the dorms line the streets to see the bikes roll by. This event is held the first Sunday in November each year.
The first years of the event was a November only ride that was Christmas to the residents with the bikers bringing clothing articles so each resident would have a gift to open under the tree. Many of these residents had been left there with no family and a small gift of a stocking hat or sweat shirt and pants brought joy to their hearts and a huge smile to their faces.
Not only are the gifts a welcome to the Whitten Center residents but monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. The Whitten Center being a SC state funded facility has undergone budget cuts and private funding is needed to handle the needs of the residents there.
A Spring Ride was initiated about 15 years ago for supply items such as body soaps and lotions, batteries, deodorant, toothpaste, hand sanitizers, adult coloring books and colored pencils. Another parade of motorcycles is taken to the Whitten Center residents and this event is held the first Sunday in April.
For both the April and November rides each year live entertainment, food, soft drinks and event t-shirts are available for purchase of which all proceeds go 100% to the Whitten Center. The groups will roll in from the surrounding areas of the state and will gather at the beautiful downtown square in Clinton, SC for the fellowship and comradery shared by both motorcycle and antique car enthusiast alike. A great setting to see old friends, make new ones and listen to great live entertainment before departing the downtown square at 2:00 pm sharp for the short ride to the Whitten Center facility. Once you roll into the center and ride through the beautiful campus you will see dozens of residents all outside lining the streets awaiting the arrival of the bikes. To see the joy and pleasure on the faces of so many less fortunate is a pure blessing in itself and most can’t make it through without shedding a tear.
